Following on from two nights in the Croatia's most picturesque cities, Dubrovnik, you'll enjoy the jewels of the Balkans on the following itinerary:

Day 1   Kotor, Montenegro

The town’s history dates back to before the epic age of Homer, but it’s the medieval wonders in Old Kotor that are most popular with tourists today. Cruises to Montenegro would not be complete without sampling the local cuisine. Old churches, shops, and bars line the avenues, and you may be surprised to stumble upon a charming piazza right in the middle of the town.

Come summer, the marina is filled with lavish yachts belonging to the ultra-rich, which presents a striking contrast to the rustic romance and ancient beauty of Kotor.

Day 2   Gallipoli, Italy

Gallipoli, found in the southern part of southern Italy’s Puglia region, blends Byzantine history and Baroque architecture, creating a coastal charm and not quite found anywhere else. Be captivated by the Byzantine fortress perched on a small island, with its surrounding defensive walls and the inviting beach.

Stroll through the historic centre’s labyrinth of alleys, adorned with whitewashed buildings and elegant palazzi, followed by a sip of limoncello while watching colourful fishing boats along the seafront promenade.

Offering glimpses into the town's rich history and cultural heritage, the Antica Fontana and the Cathedral of Sant’Agata are architectural marvels worth exploring, not to mention the Hypogeum Oil Mill below Palazzo Granafei which highlights the areas significance in olive oil production.

Day 3   Sarandë, Albania

Discover the delightful coastal retreat of Sarandë, nestled between the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea and lush olive groves. The horseshoe-shaped bay, adorned with sandy beaches and a charming promenade, offer stunning views and a relaxing atmosphere for all who visit.

The town's rich history is evident in its archaeological treasures, such as the remains of a 5th-century synagogue, which later transformed into an early Christian basilica. The intricate floor mosaics are a testament to Sarandë's ancient past, providing a glimpse into its cultural heritage.

Perched majestically atop a hill overlooking the town is the 16th-century Lëkurësi Castle, adding a touch of medieval grandeur to the landscape. Exploring this historic fortress offers panoramic views of Sarandë and its surroundings, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and admirers of scenic vistas alike.

With its blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and seaside charm, Sarandë seems like an ideal destination for travellers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration on the Albanian Riviera.

Day 4   Zakinthos, Greece

Found in the Ionian Sea, Zakinthos offers a blend of natural wonders and historical charm. The allure of Shipwreck Beach, with its pristine white pebbles contrasting against the turquoise waters is simply breath-taking. Accessible only by boat, it adds an element of seclusion and adventure to the island's allure.

Exploring the small caves around Cape Skinari, also best seen from the water, adds another layer of natural beauty to Zakinthos. The rock arches and unique formations between Skinari and the mountain village of Keri sound like intriguing landmarks, offering visitors a glimpse of the island's geological wonders.

The town, curved around a large harbor, excudes a picturesque charm, with its old Venetian castle standing guard over the area. The panoramic views from the castle, overlooking the town and harbour offers visitors a glimpse into Zakinthos's storied past and scenic beauty.

Day 5   Day at Sea

Day 6   Nafplion, Greece

Nafplion is a charming town steeped in history and cultural significance. Its picturesque setting below a rocky headland, crowned by a Venetian fortress, creates a stunning backdrop for visitors. The sheltered location adds to its allure, offering a sense of tranquillity and beauty.

The town's role as the first modern capital of Greece after the Greek revolution of the early 19th century speaks to its historical importance. The neoclassical houses, large official buildings, and carefully planned seafront streets that date from this period add to the town's unique character and architectural charm.

Exploring Nafplion must be a journey through time, with its blend of ancient fortifications, Venetian influences, and neoclassical architecture. The cultural traditions that have evolved in this idyllic setting surely contribute to its reputation as one of the loveliest small towns in the Greek islands.

Day 7   Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Time to disembark your Seabourn cruise and enter a city with a stark contrast of ancient ruins and urban development.

You’ll have 2 nights Athens, the capital of Greece, is a city steeped in history and culture, often referred to as the cradle of Western civilization. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a legacy that spans over 3,400 years.

At the heart of Athens stands the iconic Acropolis, a symbol of ancient Greece and the birthplace of democracy. The Parthenon, a majestic temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, dominates the Acropolis and is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Exploring the Acropolis and its surrounding archaeological sites, including the Theatre of Dionysus and the Temple of Hephaestus, offers visitors a glimpse into the city's ancient past.

Beyond its ancient ruins, Athens is a vibrant metropolis with a rich cultural scene. The historic Plaka neighborhood, with its narrow streets lined with neoclassical buildings, tavernas, and souvenir shops, is a favorite among visitors for its charming atmosphere and traditional Greek cuisine.

The National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum are must-visit destinations for those interested in delving deeper into Greek history and art. These museums house an extensive collection of artifacts and sculptures dating back to ancient times, providing valuable insights into Greece's rich cultural heritage.

Modern Athens is a bustling city with a diverse population, offering a mix of ancient wonders and contemporary attractions. From exploring vibrant neighbourhoods like Monastiraki and Exarchia to enjoying panoramic views from Lycabettus Hill, there's no shortage of things to see and do in this dynamic capital city.

Overall, Athens is a captivating blend of past and present, where ancient history meets modern life, making it a fascinating destination for travelers from around the world.
