Small, picturesque and fun

Good things come in small packages, and this is certainly the case with Montenegro. It’s a tiny country but it truly packs a punch when it comes to natural beauty – ancient towns are framed by azure waters and rugged mountains, with the popular national parks Durmitor and Biogradska Gora offering still, glistening lakes and verdant forest.

Just two-thirds the size of Wales, there are many fabulous activities and a vibrant culture to discover. Enjoy hiking, rafting, kayaking, cycling and more amidst the country’s impressive landscape, or head to the capital Podgorica to discover the Centre for Contemporary Art. Dubbed the ‘Theatre City’, the small town of Budva offers a brilliant schedule of open-air theatre productions, whilst the town of Stari Bar offers fascinating ruins to explore, a haunting snapshot of

Why visit Montenegro

  • Montenegro’s beaches are far less known than others in Europe, but they’re some of the most beautiful we’ve seen. Venture to Montenegro now before everyone gets a taste of how stunning the country is and you’ll be enjoying white sands and sapphire waters without the big crowds. Verdant mountains frame these quiet beaches, with the fragrant aromas of wild herbs and blossoms scenting each cove in the summer. Budva is Montenegro’s answer to Miami, adorned with vibrant bars and beach clubs that keep the party going until dawn. If you’re hoping for something a bit more peaceful, head a little further to discover Bečić, a gorgeous beach that is laidback but still near enough to Budva for a refreshing drink or snack.
  • Now we’ve convinced the beach-lovers, now it’s time to entice adventurous travellers. Montenegro offers a fantastic array of outdoor activities to keep you entertained during your holiday, including visiting Durmitor National Park for a day of hiking, water rafting and ziplining, or even cycling around the sparkling lakes at Biogradska Gora. Rafting is big here, especially as it rewards you with impressive views of Tara Canyon, whilst kayaking leads you to the enchanting Blue Grotto or across the crystal-clear Lake Skadar.
  • Montenegro’s cuisine is a flavoursome mix of European influences, including Italian, Greek and Balkan, meaning you’ll enjoy a varied palate during your holiday. Enjoy incredibly garlicky seafood along the coast, hearty bowls black risotto – getting its bold colour from cuttlefish ink, and ispod saca – their version of a roast dinner with lamb or goat slow-roasted with carrots, potatoes, onions and paprika. One of our favourite treats is Njeguši prosciutto. Dried and smoked for five months, this deliciously salty meat is well worth the tricky 25-hairpin drive up Serpentine Road to get a taste.
