Leave the poolside for a while and you’ll discover a volcanic land filled with adventure and excitement in the north, with Timanfaya National Park and the Fire Mountains offering an exciting day out.

Why visit Lanzarote?

• We love Lanzarote’s mysterious mix of lunar-like volcanic landscape and glorious golden beach, making it one of the Canary Islands’ most unique and exciting destinations for nature lovers. Timanfaya National Park is well worth a visit, adorned with extinct volcanoes and the delicious opportunity to enjoy a meal cooked by geothermal heat. An area affected by volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736 and once again in 1824, you can spend the day discovering famous geysers before stopping by a nearby vineyard. Meanwhile, Lanzarote’s beaches offer golden sands and gorgeous ocean views. Take the time to experience the series of beautiful bays at Playa de Papagayo, or go diving in Playa Chica’s calm waters adorned with grouper fish.
• The food and wine here are phenomenal. Forget the usual scene of verdant vineyards surrounded by green hills. Instead, the vineyards here are framed by rugged volcanoes and black volcanic soil. The soil here is incredibly fertile for the grape vines, culminating in some of Spain’s finest wines. The food meanwhile is a display of divine seafood, including puntillas de calamar – deep fried baby squid, boquerones – anchovies preserved in tangy vinegar and smooth olive oil, and hearty bocadillo de pescado – essentially a fish butty doused in aioli.
• Lanzarote is one of our favourite islands for an adventurous holiday. Combine long days of sunbathing with exciting afternoons of snorkelling and diving – the waters are steeped with wonderful marine life, and there’s the exciting underwater sculpture museum Museo Atlántico – or enjoy scenic hikes and cycling adventures along the beautiful hilly coastline. We recommend taking your family on a trip to Cueva de los Verdes, one of the longest lava tubes in the world that was formed about 4,000 years ago and is now a great place to explore.
