Useful facts for your holiday to Shanghai

Flights and Transfers

Direct flight time from Ireland to Shanghai Pudong Airport is at least 12 hours with variations depending on wind patterns.

Visa Requirements

A tourist visa must be obtained in advance. Passports must be valid for one month after your departure date. All travellers should check full entry requirements prior to travel.

Language

Hotels and tourists spots will have reasonable English speakers, beyond these areas it’s rare to find individuals who have anything more than a cursory knowledge. Mandarin is China’s official language, and most people in Shanghai can speak it, but on a day-to-day basis most citizens speak Wu (or Shanghainese), a different dialect of the Chinese language that is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin.

Transportation

Shanghai’s excellent public transport system makes getting around very easy. The Metro is probably the most efficient and cost-effective way of getting around (a single journey rarely costs more than £1 no matter how far you’re travelling). The bus is cheaper, but it’s also slower and more difficult to navigate if you can’t read Chinese symbols.

Currency

The Yuan is the official currency.

Electricity

220V, 50Hz. Flat and v shape pronged plugs are common.

Vaccination & Health

As health requirements change please consult with your GP or specialist travel clinic well in advance of your holiday for specific information related to your travel and medical history. Additional information can be found by visiting NaTHNaC or MASTA Travel health
